Does Cashew Butter Have Gluten?

This cashew butter recipe is gluten free. One amazing benefit when you make cashew nut butter at home is you hand select the ingredients and can be assured that it is gluten free and safe for celiac and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Store-bought nut butters a usually gluten free, but take a few seconds to check the ingredients list.

If you’re using the cashew butter in a kitchen that is not dedicated gluten free, another consideration to keep in mind is cross-contact. If gluten-containing crumbs get into the jar from double-dipping with a knife or spreader, the cashew butter will no longer be safe for celiac. We recommend labeling gluten-free condiments in a shared kitchen so they remain free from gluten.

How to Make Cashew Butter

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cashew pieces
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 2 teaspoons avocado oil, optional
raw cashew pieces

Directions

Preheat your oven to 325°F. Spread the cashew nuts in an even layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, then stir. Return nuts to the oven and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, until golden and toasted.

Transfer the nuts along with ⅛ teaspoon salt to the small bowl of a food processor, and grind until the cashew butter is smooth and creamy. Optionally, you could add up to 2 teaspoons of a neutral oil like avocado to facilitate processing, but it’s not necessary. Add more salt to taste if needed.

This recipe makes about 1 cup of cashew butter, which stores best chilled in an airtight container. If the chilled cashew butter is difficult to spread, set it out on the counter for a few minutes before you need it and it will become easier to use.
